Another thing that I am very interested in besides music is the environment, and I may be writing some about it here on my blog. I was reading some stuff online and came across an article titled “Florida employee ‘punished for using phrase climate change.'” I was curious. It was about Barton Bibler, an employee of Florida’s environmental protection department, who mentioned climate change in his official notes from a Florida Coastal Managers Forum meeting. Discussed at that meeting was climate change, rising sea levels, and the environmental impact of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Bibler got told to stay home from work and not come back until he had received a mental health evaluation for his violation of “governor Rick Scott’s unwritten ban on using the phrases “climate change” or “global warming” under any circumstance.”
What the hell.
Climate change and global warming is not something that can be argued with. It’s science and it’s happening right now as we speak.
The environment is something I have grown to be passionate about. Sure, I still do a lot of things that are bad for the environment, but I believe that taking care of the earth we live on is something we all need to think about more. I’m currently taking a class right now, environmental science, that has really educated me on a lot of this stuff. I’m not an expert, but I do know that climate change and global warming are actual things. Saying that these don’t exist is like saying that gravity is a fake concept that people have come up with. You can’t argue that gravity isn’t what keeps us all from floating off into space, and you can’t argue that global warming isn’t happening.
As my environmental teacher says, just because you have a winter that is colder than usual where you live, doesn’t mean that global warming isn’t happening. Global warming is the idea that the AVERAGE global temperature is rising. This global warming is what leads to climate change, which could be why you are having colder winters where you live.
I found this article to be particularly disturbing. If we have authoritative figures, like Rick Scott, trying to hide the fact that global warming and climate change is happening, then we have a problem. The reason why it is so difficult to make changes to help our planet, is in part because of the government. In Florida’s case, that would be Rick Scott. This is why grassroots movements are important. Starting with regular people like you and me, we must pressure our government to make changes. We can’t let ignorant people control what everyone things about climate change and global warming. Instead, we must speak up, because global warming is something that won’t go away unless we accept it is happening and move forward to fix the problem.
