This past Wednesday I went to a presentation during lunch called The Newsroom and Beyond by Quinn Pettifer. Pettifer, a community outreach and engagement director for the Gazette, discussed solutions based journalism. Solutions based journalism is a type of journalism in which the journalist is very involved and really explores and goes in depth on the topic at hand. The best way to do this according to Pettifer, is to actually experience what is being talked about. It doesn’t work to just drop in at an event an expect to write something that will really show what it’s all about. What she suggests is to actually be involved in the event to know what things are like from the inside rather than just observing from the outside.
Pettifer’s main point is that journalism needs to change with the times. Of course, there will always be breaking news that needs coverage, but there are other stories that need to be written. These other stories need to be relevant to the times and discuss things that people are interested in and want to learn more about. As Pettifer says, everyone is a journalist. We have social media such as twitter that can spread news, but we also having blogging. Although my blog isn’t always about current events, I hope that you find it to be interesting. I also hope that it introduces you to some new topics that can directly relate to you!
